We used to get this thing in Wisconsin called “thunder snow”. It would be snowing – usually great big, fat flakes – and then you’d hear thunder. I only remember thunder snow once or twice in the more than 25 years I was in Wisconsin.
Here in Virginia we don’t get thunder snow. We get thunderstorms in the winter.
Apparently having a thunderstorm in the winter here means that we will get a measurable snowfall within 10 days. At least that’s what they tell me.
I’ve been in numerous thunderstorms in the winter here. Including one not that long ago. And no snow followed.
Old wive’s tale? Superstition? Observed phenomena?
I don’t know. But I’m glad we didn’t have two snow events in one winter.
