Memorial Day

Yesterday was Memorial Day.

I had been raised to believe that this day was to honor fallen soldiers. Since we didn’t have any in our family, it was just another break from school.

But when I adopted an older couple down the street, my perception changed. Grandma B would always go out to the cemetery and put flowers on graves and tidy things up for Memorial Day.

It wasn’t until much later that I realized most of the graves she was tending were war deaths. She was raised in a much different era than myself and entered the WAVES during WWII. Those graves she cleaned up were family members and friends who had died in the war. She just happened to tidy up the non-veteran graves while she was out there because Grandma B was nothing if not efficient.

So that’s just a few thoughts on the holiday from this corner…
