Backhanded comments

Photo by macwagen Why is it when someone says, “I don’t mean to be rude, but…” you can sure that they are going to be? The same applies to just about any sentence that starts with “I don’t mean to [fill in the blank] but…”

I have seen quite a bit of this in the blogging world, and through email. I have also seen people operate under this. One acquaintance does not understand why people always get upset with her for interfering when she says “I don’t mean to interfere…”

This little piece of self-deception is generally not received. If the person truly did not want to pry, interfere, be rude, etc., they would do much better by simply keeping their mouths shut, or their fingers inactive.
