I am intrigued by an article that I recently read about creating my own set of holidays.
After all, what are holidays other than a date that a group of people have agreed to set aside to celebrate something? I’m not aware of any rule that says that holidays have to be “official” in order to be valid.
I’ve always lamented that the official holidays seem to leave a big gap between the February President’s Day holiday and Memorial Day at the end of May. That’s far too long to go without a three day weekend, in my book.
So what holidays would you create if you could create some?
The spiritual holidays I celebrate have a tendency to not fall on the official holidays, and they are also spread throughout the year. This gives some good spacing and planning time, but this can also lead to them slipping through the cracks. I really have to mark them. I imagine the same would be for personal holidays as well.
Here are my holidays, in no particular order of celebration:
- Thank-goodness-I-no-longer-live-in-the-frozen-tundra Day: a day to celebrate that sleet, major snowfall and sub-zero windchills are no longer a regular part of the weather I experience
- Hot Soup holiday: this would be a celebration of that wonderful comfort food, soup. Preferably home made, with hot bread.
- The Un-holiday: this would be celebrated in April. March is a very full month with at least two family birthdays every week. This would give me time to celebrate nothing
- Breakfast For Dinner Day: A day when any breakfast food is game for dinner. Something I love to do, but get funny looks when I try to implement. Maybe an official holiday would allow me to sneak this in.
- Springtime Day: a day to appreciate the return to life after winter
- First Tomato of the Season Day – to celebrate the first harvest of a garden tomato.
- No TV Day: I detest television in general, and I would love to see my family sit down for an evening together to play a game or read together or whatever.
- Count The Stars Day: a day to look up and see the sky. This would have to depend on the weather.
- Plan For Renewal Day: every fall I get the itch to learn something new. It would be good to sit down and focus on these things for a time period
- Apple Picking Day: I don’t live in an area where we can pick apples, but I love autumn, and I love the smell of fresh apples
- Jam Day: A day to pick and preserve strawberries into luscious jam
- Beach Day: A day to spend in the sun, soaking up the warmth
